Housing Adaptation Grant for Disabled People

Prior to 1st December 2024, this grant was known as the Housing Adaptation Grant for People with a Disability.

What it is:

The Housing Adaptation Grant for People with a Disability is a helpful scheme designed to provide money to people who need to make their homes more suitable for their specific needs due to a disability.

This grant assists in covering the costs of necessary works to adapt the home and is managed by local authorities.

Who it’s for:

This grant is for disabled people who need changes to their homes to better accommodate their needs. It’s also available to homeowners applying for a family member with a disability.

While the local authority runs this scheme you do not need to be in a local authority home to avail of it.

How it works:

Assessment of Eligibility

To qualify for this grant, your household income is considered. This is the income of the household from the previous tax year. The income of the property owner and their spouse may also be taken into account.

Grant Amount

The maximum grant available is €40,000 (€30,000 for applications received prior to 1^st December 2024), covering up to 100% of the approved costs of the adaptation works (95% for applications received prior to 1^st December 2024). The actual amount granted depends on your household income.

Types of Work Covered

The grant can be used for various types of adaptation works, including:

Installing ramps or other accessibility features.
Fitting grab rails for safety.
Adapting bathroom facilities like installing level access showers or downstairs toilets.
Installing stair lifts for easier access between floors.
Creating space for wheelchair access.
Constructing extensions, typically for additional bedrooms or bathrooms tailored for individuals with disabilities.

Application Process:

To apply, you can download the application form from the local authority’s website or obtain it from their Housing Grants Section. Once you’ve completed the form, submit it to your Local Authority Office for processing. You can also meet with a Housing officer in the local authority to assist you on your application. You must wait until your application is approved before you start the adaptations.
